As an exercise physiologist, I am so over hearing people going to the gym because they don’t like something about their body, they can describe in detail all the physical features that they don’t like about themselves and all the ways in which their body moves, as compared to how it used to or compared to someone else’s and how much they wish their body still moved like that our moved like this other person’s. That to me is self degradation.

In consultations with new potential clients, I notice, as with most of the clientele that I work with, the luxury watch and designer shoes and bags, or the cool accessories like the latest iPhone, Apple or Samsung devices they walk around with. I like so many of my clients like nice things, so let’s just put that out there, however, when I give a simple prompt it really opens up their eyes to what’s real and even then, the facade of the exterior will win 50% of the time.

I ask people to describe their dream car to me, what that car would be if they didn’t have to worry about cost. Some people describe luxury cars, some people describe practical cars, the features they would get, everything about this car is described in detail. Then I ask, how would you maintain this car? They will never miss an inspection, they would only use premium gas, they would have it cleaned and buffed on the regular to keep it looking nice, the maintenance that goes in a car is quite a bit of work and comes at a pretty penny. And these same people, when asked about their diets, they will admit to not eating well, not taking care of themselves, not drinking enough water, not getting enough exercise. But the dream car cannot miss an inspection, it only gets premium gas…I think you get the gist. If you didn’t PEOPLE VALUE THINGS MORE THAN THEY VALUE THEMSELVES.

Person after person will describe what they want their bodies to look like and how they might want to feel again and how they want to be able to perform again, but when it comes to making that investment in themselves, it something that they cant afford, or dont have time for. How the heck do you not have time to take care of the one body, the one vehicle that truly matters? You don’t get another one, you can always buy another dream car, you can’t buy a new body.

The reason people value things more than they value themselves, is because the world values things more than it values people. So people place their self worth and value in things. It seems better to own cool running shoes by Nike, than it is to actually go running in the shoes. It is better to appear healthy and together than it is to actually be better, being better requires too much work. The instant gratification mindset is one of the big reasons why people give up on their goals of being healthy, if it doesn’t happen in a week or a month, it’s taking too long. People will spend years  living unhealthily and being dysfunctional, but want to have their dream body and all functions it comes with in weeks. Let me know when that math adds up.

I have been a health professional for over a decade and I have noticed a few trends as it pertains to what prompt people to commit to health and wellness. There is an emotional attachment to the goals, there is always a ‘why’

  1. Some never felt beautiful or good enough in the past and such want to change that narative now.
  2. There was some bullying or psychological trauma faced, where you might have felt powerless. Working out and getting strong is a means of feeling powerful
  3. There is a need to be better and function better for the sake of longevity. Some people want to slow the aging process down as much as possible
  4. Some people want to have the level of performance they had before
  5. Some people want to recover from injury and fortify themselves so that they never get injured again
  6. Some people just want to look good. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, don’t let anyone make you feel like there’s something wrong with wanting to look good for themselves. Just because, I am right there with ya! When you look good, you feel good.

Love yourself so much that you want to be better, you want to live better. You only have one life, live it to the fullest. Hiding behind items and surgery will not change poor health habits. Dismiss your limiting mindsets and let’s get it together together.
